Mikado Oak Dining Table | Interlocking Legs, Seats up to 12

A solid oak dining table built around its base. Most dining tables start with the top. The Mikado started with the legs.

Designed by Alain van Havre, the Mikado is built around a single structural idea — that two sets of solid oak legs, tapered and precisely shaped, can interlock under a rectangular top without a single bolt holding the puzzle together. The result is a base that earns more attention than most dining tables manage with their entire design. Functional. Sculptural. Completely its own.

Two leg types — one tapering from 7.2 to 9cm, one from 7 to 8.8cm — slot together to form a base that distributes load evenly and creates a visual tension that makes the table look like it is always mid-motion. Like the Japanese game it takes its name from, where removing a single element collapses the whole, nothing about the Mikado base is incidental. Rated to 160kg and standing 73cm clear beneath the top, it is as structurally confident as it looks.

The tabletop and base are cut from 100% solid oak — Quercus robur sourced from Serbia — giving each table a grain pattern that no two pieces share exactly. In the oiled natural oak finish the wood is treated with a PFAS-free hardwax oil that feeds the grain and keeps the surface open and warm to the touch. In the varnished oak black finish a varnish closes the surface and deepens the oak to near-black, changing the character of the table entirely while keeping the same interlocking base structure beneath.

How to Care for Your Mikado Table

Solid oak is a natural material — it lives and breathes with your home, so a little care keeps it looking its best for years. Wipe spills promptly, use coasters and placemats, and follow the guide for your finish below. See our oiled oak care guide.

Mikado Oak Dining Table - Frequently Asked Questions

How does the base hold together without bolts?

It’s the whole idea of the design. Two sets of tapered solid oak legs interlock under the top — like the Japanese game it’s named after, where every piece carries the structure. The base distributes load evenly, is rated to 160kg, and stands 73cm clear beneath the top, so there’s room to sit comfortably all the way around.

What’s it made from, and how do I look after it?

100% solid oak (Quercus robur, sourced from Serbia), so every table has its own grain. Care depends on your finish — see the oiled oak or varnished wood care guides. Wipe spills promptly and use coasters and placemats to protect the surface.

What sizes does it come in, and how many does each seat?

Three lengths, all 110cm wide: 203cm seats 6–8, 240cm seats 8–10, and 280cm seats 10–12.

Is it really solid oak?

Yes — both the top and the base are cut from 100% solid oak, not veneer.

Can I see it in person in Ireland?

Mikado is part of our Online Exclusive range. Have any questions before you order? Feel free to visit our showroom in Douglas or book a free consultation for expert advice.

How long will I be waiting?

What happens after I order?

Our customer service team places your order with the manufacturer. When it arrives at our warehouse, we’ll email you — and if you paid a deposit, that email includes your remaining balance. Full payment is needed before delivery can be booked.

How is delivery arranged, and do you assemble it?

Free delivery and professional assembly are included across the Republic of Ireland on orders over €399, right into your room. Once your order is in and paid, our logistics team contacts you directly to arrange a date and time — they plan all the delivery routes, so they’re the only team who can confirm timings. All furniture is delivered to the ground floor, with the exception of bedroom pieces. Tight access or stairs? Let them know — tell us about any steps, narrow doorways or tight corners, and measure doorways, hallways and stairs beforehand, as a redelivery charge may apply if access isn’t flagged and delivery can’t be completed safely.

Can I change my delivery date?

Yes — if your plans change (building work, a moving date), let us know as early as you can, quoting your order number.

Can I pay a deposit?

Yes — pay in full, or start your order with a 50% deposit and pay the balance before delivery.
